Typical application scenarios and precautions of laser cladding technology in skateboard repair

Typical application scenarios of laser cladding technology in skateboard repair

1. Wear and micro-crack repair of skateboard brackets

As a core component connecting the plate surface and the wheel, the skateboard bracket is constantly subjected to friction and impact loads, which makes it prone to wear or micro-cracks at the mating surfaces of the wheel axles and the connection points of the plate surfaces. When the wear depth is ≤0.5mm or the crack propagation length is less than 5mm, laser cladding technology can achieve in-situ regeneration of the worn surface and metallurgical closure of the crack by precisely cladding metal matrix composites. This process not only restores the geometric accuracy of the support but also enhances its fatigue resistance through material strengthening, avoiding structural safety hazards caused by local failure.

2. Repair of collision damage on the edge of the board surface

During high-intensity actions such as leaping and landing, the edges of the skateboard often experience interlayer peeling or notches due to hitting the ground or obstacles. For carbon fiber/wood composite board surfaces, when the damage depth does not exceed one-third of the board thickness and the longitudinal crack is less than 100mm, using cladding powder that matches the thermal expansion coefficient of the base material can achieve gradient repair of the edge. This method not only ensures the aerodynamic shape accuracy of the board surface but also eliminates stress concentration through the design of the material transition layer. Compared with overall replacement, it can reduce maintenance costs by more than 60%.

3. Precise repair of the axle system

As a key friction pair of rotating components, the inner hole surface of the wheel bushing is prone to wear of 0.1 to 0.3mm after long-term operation. Laser cladding technology can achieve precise repair of hole diameters within ±0.01mm by deposing cobalt-based alloy coatings on the inner walls of bushings, and at the same time increase the surface hardness to above HRC55. The rotational accuracy of the repaired bushing has reached ISO grade 5, significantly improving the smoothness of the gear train operation. Its service life can reach over 80% of that of new parts.

Precautions for laser cladding repair processing of skateboards

1. Material matching is the key

When choosing the cladding material, it is essential to ensure that it matches the base material of the damaged part of the skateboard to avoid poor bonding between the cladding layer and the base material due to material incompatibility, which may lead to problems such as peeling and cracking. For instance, for skateboard brackets made of aluminum alloy, aluminum-based alloy cladding materials should be selected. For steel components (such as the connecting parts of some skateboards), iron-based alloy cladding materials should be chosen. At the same time, the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between the cladding material and the substrate should be taken into account. If the difference is too large, it may generate significant internal stress during the cooling process, leading to cracking of the cladding layer.

2. Closed-loop control of process parameters

The process parameters of laser cladding have a significant impact on the repair quality and must be strictly controlled. Excessive laser power can easily lead to over-melting of the substrate, causing significant thermal deformation and heat-affected zones, and even burning out components. If the power is too low, the cladding material cannot be fully melted and will not bond firmly with the substrate. If the scanning speed is too fast, the cladding layer is prone to defects such as discontinuity and porosity. If the speed is too slow, it will increase the heat input, resulting in greater thermal deformation. The powder feeding amount (or wire feeding speed) needs to be matched with the laser power and scanning speed. If the powder feeding amount is too much, the cladding layer is prone to accumulation and unfused defects may occur. If the amount of powder fed is too small, it will not be able to effectively fill the damaged area. Therefore, before the repair, the optimal process parameters need to be determined through experiments, and real-time monitoring and adjustment should be carried out during the repair process.

3. Emphasize the professional quality of the operators

Laser cladding repair equipment is a high-precision and high-tech device, and the operators need to possess professional knowledge and skills. Operators should be familiar with the working principle, structural composition and operation methods of the equipment, and be able to accurately set and adjust process parameters. At the same time, it is necessary to understand the material properties, damage conditions and technical requirements of laser cladding repair of the skateboard components, be able to formulate reasonable repair plans based on the actual situation, and handle the problems that arise in a timely manner during the repair process. In addition, operators must strictly abide by the equipment operation procedures and safety protection regulations, and take personal safety protection measures (such as wearing laser protective glasses, protective gloves, etc.) to prevent laser radiation from causing harm to the human body.

4. Do a good job in maintenance and care after repair

Although the repaired skateboard components have regained their performance, they still need to be well maintained and cared for during use to extend their service life. Before use, check whether the repaired area has any looseness, cracks or other conditions. During use, avoid subjecting the skateboard to excessive impact, collision or other violent external forces. After use, promptly clean the impurities on the surface of the skateboard and lubricate and maintain the moving parts (such as brackets and bearings). Regularly inspect the repaired parts and deal with any problems in a timely manner to ensure that the skateboard is always in good working condition.
